2013 Editors’ Choice Awards

The Canadian Society of Magazine Editors (CSME) announced the 2013 Editors’ Choice Award winners on Wednesday, June 5, at a gala dinner held during the MagNet conference in Toronto. Cottage Life emerged as the big winner of the evening, receiving awards for Magazine of the Year (medium circulation) and Best Display. “Super-fun editorial packages really grab your attention,” said one judge. “It has excellent service packages and columns that serve the broad range of readers and topics well.” Cottage Life editor Penny Caldwell walked away with the coveted Editor of the Year Award, which she also received in 2006 and 2010.

Canadian Living also had a successful evening, taking honours for Magazine of the Year (large circulation) and Best Website Editorial (more than 150,000 UVs), as well as an honourable mention for Best Blog. Fellow – and new – TC Media magazine Fresh Juice won its first Editors’ Choice Award, for Best Website Editorial (less than 150,000 UVs), while Air Canada in-flight magazine enRoute took home the first Editors’ Choice Award for Custom Magazine of the Year. And Yellowknife-based Up Here took home Magazine of the Year (small circulation) and Best Front of Book. “Up Here makes me want to pull up stakes and move [to Canada’s far north], for Pete’s sake,” noted one of the judges.

Prior to the awards ceremony, Adam Sternbergh, culture editor of the New York Times Magazine, addressed the room about when and why magazines should survive in a keynote talk entitled “What is the point of magazines?”
