10 free online tools for editors

At CSME’s breakfast event at the Nespresso Cafe on Wednesday, Feb. 3, Toronto editors gathered to hear from digital experts (or media geeks, whatever) to learn about (mostly) free digital tools for improving workflow and generally making an editor’s life easier. Digital strategist Lauren Reyes-Grange and Canadian Business deputy editor Graham Scott came with the goods: 10 free (or at least cheap) digital tools for editors

Here’s a quick rundown of what you missed, and should download immediately:

1. Crowdbooster
Realtime analytics for Facebook and Twitter, with drilled-down metrics and information on how you compare to your competitors. (This one will cost you $9 per month.)

2. Wiselytics
Detailed Facebook analytics that provide a dollar estimate for how much your social media efforts have been worth.

3. Canva
Instantly up your graphics game without mastering Photoshop. Make sophisticated images for print, web, and social media.

4. Slack
Because email is the worst. Never lose information in an email chain again — keep track of it in organized channels, and chat with your coworkers in real time.

5. Trello
Keep track of stories (and their status, and supporting material) and effortlessly move them from one issue to another.

6. Typeform
Better than SurveyMonkey (read: better looking).

7. Lastpass
Keep track of all your passwords in one hack-proof place.

8. Google Keep
The ultimate notepad — keep notes, docs, images, and links all in one place, and share it effortlessly.

9. Toggl
Find out how much time you spend in a day working on various tasks, then allot your time accordingly. You may be surprised.

10. Datawrapper
Create infographics! Because soon we won’t edit stories, we’ll just edit infographics.
